I would like to make a combination of Rumba, Salsa and reggae music.

Techniques.

1) Using Ableton Live, I expect editing all:

-Drum sets,

-Breaks and beats from impulse sampler on Midi clip editor or Midi keyboard.

2) I expect importing some audio sampler from different CDs on my project so that they can be edited and mixed with my own creativity.

3) Live vocal and instrument is to be played in this project. Eg: Acoustic guitar and electric guitar.

The overall project was completed as it was stated.

Tom sounded good as the narrator. However I did have to edit it barbarically to meet the brief!! It introduced the theme of Dinosaur well as I scripted it with some choice adjectives.

The musics theme of dinosaurs was created with the slow bass to illustrate power, this was done in Reason.

Dino 2 was taken from dinosaurss sounds.com, although the subsequent sounds bears little resemblence to the original after extensive editting. I crossfaded from Pebbles into this.

Capturing the sounds was hard as the mics were quite sensitive, and thus susceptable to ambient noise. This called for a large amount of editing from the original source material. Particularly difficult was when I recorded Pebbles as she wheezes quite subliminally. Therefore I had to get a clean section (which was short) and reapeat it!.

The sound of the meteor crashing was as I planned captured on Minidisc at the local skip yard with bits of rubbish being dropped, thus simulating the impact.
For the sound of extinction i pitched down a cat effecteed it and repeated it to pluralise it.

I worked through the modifications that Graham suggested, (there were quite a few to bring my project upto spec))

The first sound I created was a voice over for the introduction/greeting. It was to last no longer than 15 seconds welcoming the visitor. I welcomed the visitors; I explained what they would be learning and experiencing here . Firstly I wrote down the introduction. Once written I then recorded it using a Condencer Microphone, Mixer and Cubase. When I was happy with the finished product I rendered & exported it as an MP3 file. To get rid of the backround noise/hiss I am going to use an EQ and compress the voice. I am also going to add some more effects such as reverb & delay to bring more of a dramatic feel to the voice.

The second sound i created was the backround music for a walkway. This should last no longer than 1 minute and be looped no more than 3 times. The piece of music I used was downloaded from youtube and then converted into an MP3 file. The piece is mainly made up of jungle drums, brass instruments and dinosaur sound effects. I edited the pan automation to fade the melody between the L & R speakers. It loops 3 times and has 5 sound effects in it. Once I was happy with the finished product I rendered and exported it as an MP3 file.

Later I was to create 2 sound effects for each of the 2 areas within the exhibition. These areas are the first and final scenes. The first scene is 1 method of extinction (Explosion). And the second sound is the second version of extinction (Ice Age).

I used and created two sounds for the 1st scene. These sounds included a dramatic instrumental which builds up to the big explosion and then an electrical kind of sound combined with the explosion to bring a different idea to it. I created the electrical sound in reason and downloaded the piece of music from youtube. I imported them both into reason and worked on bringing them together.

For my second extinction sound effect i created an ice age type of sound using 7 effects in reason. Once I was happy with the sound and mood of the effect I rendered and exported it to WAV.

The main equipment required is as follows:

• PC including Sound Card
• Cubase
• Headphones

Sound 1 – Pterodactyl Sounds – pterodactyl.wav

This will be either a combination of seagull samples from internet and sound library or voice recorded. This sound will need either Internet and Creative Console or Dynamic Microphone along with the main equipment.

Sound 2 – Dinosaur Roar – dinoroar.wav

This will be a combination of samples from the sound library edited within Cubase, maybe adding some processes and effects.

Sound 3 – Voiceover – voiceover.wav

This will be voice recorded using a condenser microphone. Therefore I will need a condenser microphone as peripheral equipment.

Sound 4 – Walkway Music – walkway.wav

I decided that for sound to I will use a bed of music created within Reason and maybe combine it with some ambient water sounds and the previous dinosaur sounds created. This means I will require Reason and the original sounds I am going to use.

Sound 5 – Ambientwater – ambientwater.wav

This sound will be some ambient sounds for use in my music and as a video sound for the extinction video, as a life before extinction sound. I will need to use a mini disc kit to get some natural ambient water sounds.

Sound 6 – volcano extinction – volcano.wav

This will be a few samples maybe from the internet or the sound library and creatively edited using Cubase, maybe some processes and effects. Just the main equipment and sound files are needed for this sound.

All sounds will be saved in WAV Format as there is no need to transfer files quickly over the internet.

I feel my project meets the assignment brief. The requirements were that I create six sounds to go with a dinosaur exhibition, two dinosaur sounds, voiceover of no more than 15 seconds, music for walkway no more than a minute looping no more than three times and two other sounds to go with a video of the extinction of the dinosaurs.

For my first sound I was asked to create a voiceover, this was required to be no more than 15 seconds long and also to welcome to the visitors to the exhibition. My voiceover meets these requirements. I recorded the voiceover using a condenser microphone through Cubase and after editing it and adding effects then exported it as a WAV as no need for internet transfer. The vocal was a clear quick introduction to the exhibition with a little information. I was given feedback by the client stating that the sound could benefit from some compression and less effect on the sound, also it was noticed that the sound cuts before the effected sound ends. If given more time I would spend time trying to find a vocal as with the time allocated I didn’t have much choice on the vocal.

Next I would be required to create two dinosaur sounds to go with the exhibition. For my first dinosaur sound I decided to combine some lion sounds from the sound library containing animal sounds. I combined two different lion roars and used time stretch, distortion and cross fading to produce this sound the exported it as a Wav format because not needed to transfer over the internet, the feedback I was given concluded that this sound was complete.

For my second dinosaur sound I decided to create a more screechy Pterodactyl sound. I combined some Seagull sounds recorded from a website using creative audio console with some sound library seagull and crow sounds, these were then pitch shifted and time stretched before being crossfaded to achieve the final product, I was given some feedback stating that I might consider using some EQ to lower the frequencies on the screeching as it was a bit high. This will be saved in Wav format as there is no need for internet transfers.

Following my dinosaur sounds I was required to produce two other extinction video sounds. I decided upon one extinction sound, maybe a meteor or volcano, after a little research I decided on a volcano sound and gathered a lava bubbles sound from the internet and a volcano sound from sound library, these I then combined to create my own volcano sound. The feedback I was given stated that I should make it clearer that I combined two sounds for this. This will be saved in Wav format as there is no need for internet transfers.

The other video sound I decided should be some ambient sound, water, this I captured from a local river using the mini disc kit allowed from the studio. I then layered the sound to use it with my music to add ambience effect. After being given feedback I was told that although good it isn’t really whole enough for the video it is plain and needs more going on, so I will now look at adding more ambience to compliment it leaving the original water sounds in my music. Hopefully with the added improvements the sound will fit a lighter happier mood, to illustrate the better times before extinction. This will be saved in Wav format as there is no need for internet transfers.

I was then asked to create some music, this was to be no more than one minute in total and to loop no more than three times. My music was last I decided to create the main beat within reason using the ReDrum and a couple of Malstrom Synthesisers. This music was aimed to be a bit dark, sort of modern looking through at the prehistoric world, I then moved the loop into Cubase exported as a WAV file and added my ambient water effects and also the dinosaur sounds, I combined three different twenty second versions to ensure that the song does not go over the one minute time allowed for this sound. This will be saved in Wav format as there is no need for internet transfers.

Overall I feel I have done well with the knowledge I have and would only have added to the project given more time with a better vocal for the voiceover and possibly some more time spent on perfecting the sounds if I had access to better equalising and compressing facilities.

I have followed the brief, which asks for six original sounds It is my hope that my project meets the brief.

Sound 1

Sound 1 is the voice over for which I scripted. I used Thom Barraclough because he had a good voice. The sound was created with a condenser Mic recording. Now the sound is just under the maximum of 15 seconds. with a pop shield for articulation and minimum of sibilance. The sound was edited using the scrub handles in Cubase, original editing was too harsh so I went to the pool to get the original Through the writing of a script I intended to set the scene. Music for a walkway was the original brief. This was created in Reason where I found that 32 bars of music is roughtly equal to 1 minute l. The music is comprissed of just 3 instrument. After guidance I have decided to add maybe another two sounds for ambience. This is called music 01 and is an MP3

Sound 5

This is the sound of extinction. A good sound that requires editing to beef it up and give it more lower frequencies. It also has a cut close to the beginning that needs sorting out. This is called skips 04 and is saved as a wav

This has been extensively edited at the clients request now its sounds like the yelp of the pitiful creatures. This is called extinction.

It was created from a cats meow which was pitched down and is saved as a wav.
